National University (NU), situated in the Sampaloc area of Manila, the capital of the Philippines, has been a prestigious private, coeducational, non-sectarian comprehensive university since its establishment in 1900 by Mr. Mariano F. Jhocson Sr. It holds the distinction of being the first institution in the Philippines to use English as the medium of instruction. Known for its exceptional educational quality and rich historical heritage, the university has a prominent position in the Philippine education sector, with a history spanning over 120 years.



Initially founded as Colegio Filipino, National University was the first private, non-sectarian, coeducational institution in the Philippines to adopt English as the language of instruction. Officially renamed as National University on June 17, 1921, it marked a significant turning point in Philippine education. Since then, the university has undergone numerous important developments and transformations, especially after its acquisition by the SM Group in 2008, which modernized its infrastructure and laboratories.



National University has several campuses across the Philippines, with its main campus in Sampaloc, Manila. Additional satellite campuses include Laguna, MOA, Fairview, Bliwag, Dasmarinas, Bacolod, and Asia Pacific College. Equipped with modern teaching facilities, advanced laboratories, and sports amenities, these campuses support the academic and athletic development of students.


The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs tailored to meet the demands of industry and modern technology. Alongside traditional disciplines, it has emphasized modern fields such as Computer Science, Marine Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Electronics and Communications Engineering. National University also houses colleges of Nursing, Hotel and Restaurant Management, and Information Technology.

National University has produced numerous distinguished alumni, including two Presidents of the Philippines, several national artists, politicians, business leaders, engineers, architects, healthcare professionals, educators, TV personalities, and athletes. The university's Dentistry program is nationally acclaimed and internationally recognized, training a significant number of dentists for countries such as the United States. Additionally, National University has been ISO certified for three consecutive years, showcasing its excellence in educational quality and management.
